NIHR Chairperson’s Statement on Human Rights Day
On the occasion of Human Rights Day and the seventy-seventh anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which falls on the tenth of December each year, Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), affirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain has continued, over the past years, to strengthen its human rights system by updating national legislation and developing institutional mechanisms that support the protection of rights and freedoms.
Alderazi noted that Bahrain has achieved tangible progress in the fields of restorative justice for children, alternative sentencing, labor protection, and social support, in addition to the ongoing efforts to implement the National Human Rights Plan (2022–2026) in cooperation with official entities and civil society organizations.
He explained that oversight and human rights institutions— including the National Institution for Human Rights, the Ombudsman’s Office, the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission, and the Special Investigations Unit—have contributed to reinforcing the principles of transparency and strengthening guarantees of the rule of law.
He added that Bahrain continues its contributions at the international level by promoting the values of coexistence and peace, and supporting the legitimate rights of peoples, foremost among them the Palestinian cause.
The Chairperson concluded by reaffirming the NIHR’s commitment to its mandate of monitoring, oversight, and human rights awareness-raising, in a manner that enhances the protection of human dignity for all members of society.
